This week in class we talked about global citizenship. Before this class I had never heard of global citizenship before did not know much about it. Global citizenship is how you view others in the world, how you participate and even help with world issues involving the world as a whole. This really made me realize that I can be a better global citizen now that I know what it means. There are many ways you can improve your global citizenship. You can volunteer, do mission work, and also donate money to help people in need and give them hope. However, another great way to be a better global citizen is to pray to God to help these people who are less fortunate than most of us. One prayer can go a long way. We all need to become better global citizens, especially us in the United States. Our nation has a lot of nationalism and I think that sometimes that gets in the way of our global citizenship. We can still have a prominent nationalism but we can't let that stop us from becoming better global citizens.
I really enjoyed the activity we did in our groups when we created survey questions based on global citizenship. It was a hard concept to grasp at first but I think all of the groups really got a great understanding of what it really means and how to create great survey questions. I am actually looking forward to filling out the survey that we collectively helped create in class. I am also curious about the results we will receive from everyone on campus who fills out our survey as well.
Here is a short video that really puts global citizenship into perspective. The video really helps us get the general understanding of what global citizenship really means and how we can become even better global citizens.
There are many different aspects of culture. You have, beliefs, ideas, traditions, symbols, norms, and a common language. Without these things you do not have a culture. Take our culture for example, we are mostly a christian nation, we have traditions such as calendar holidays, we have English as a common language, we have a written language and we have social norms and ideas. When we have to classify cultures we have to ask ourselves some questions. Do we share the same elements from our culture with another culture? I think every culture has some common elements with other cultures. Christianity is a worldwide religion and can be found in many cultures. We also need to ask if these elements are different, as in we need to look at how the elements shared in different cultures are the same or different in relation to each culture. Finally we need to look at if the elements of a culture are borrowed from another culture. Many of the elements in our culture have came from Europe. I think classifying culture is a huge aspect of Sociologists. They study different cultures and norms of cultures which I think is very important.
This video deals with ethnocentrism and gives us a perspective of how we may not see other cultures as we should. It shows us that when sociologists classify cultures it helps us to understand the cultural relativism and how we need to see other cultures as equally as ours.
Sociology is the systematic study of human society in different environments.
Global Sociology is.......???????......wait what?
Most of us have been studying Sociology since freshman year. We understand what it is, how it works and how people study it. However, do we really know what global sociology is? I honestly still don't have any clue what it really is and apparently neither do most sociologists. They can't seem to put a permanent definition on it and I am not going to try to do it either, I am just an unemployed college student who is barely sneaking by with his grades. If sociologists can't put a definition on it then neither can I. However, I want to try to somewhat understand global sociology.
So sociology is focused on human society in different environments. So if you add the word global to sociology then wouldn't you assume that its just the study of sociology but of human society as a whole? Not just within one culture, group of people, or even one nation but the world as a whole? That's what it means to me but how could it be that simple and yet there is no set definition on global sociology? Maybe a "definition" that us college students can better understand will help?
I chose this video because most of us college students can relate to this, drinking. This video shows us the global sociology of alcohol advertising and how it has affected the world. Hopefully this gives us a somewhat better understanding of what global sociology is with an example we can relate with.
