Global Citizenship (Sumblog 3)

This week in class we talked about global citizenship. Before this class I had never heard of global citizenship before did not know much about it. Global citizenship is how you view others in the world, how you participate and even help with world issues involving the world as a whole. This really made me realize that I can be a better global citizen now that I know what it means. There are many ways you can improve your global citizenship. You can volunteer, do mission work, and also donate money to help people in need and give them hope. However, another great way to be a better global citizen is to pray to God to help these people who are less fortunate than most of us. One prayer can go a long way. We all need to become better global citizens, especially us in the United States. Our nation has a lot of nationalism and I think that sometimes that gets in the way of our global citizenship. We can still have a prominent nationalism but we can't let that stop us from becoming better global citizens.

I really enjoyed the activity we did in our groups when we created survey questions based on global citizenship. It was a hard concept to grasp at first but I think all of the groups really got a great understanding of what it really means and how to create great survey questions. I am actually looking forward to filling out the survey that we collectively helped create in class. I am also curious about the results we will receive from everyone on campus who fills out our survey as well.

Here is a short video that really puts global citizenship into perspective. The video really helps us get the general understanding of what global citizenship really means and how we can become even better global citizens.

  1. I feel the same way, before discussing global citizenship I could be defined as a global citizen but wasn't even aware that I was one. I was unaware that my concern for earth and people around the world had a definition. It was all new news to me and I think you did a good job explaining what global citizenship was and actions that could define someone as a global citizen.

  2. I am as well quite excited to get my hands on our survey and its results. I liked some aspects of global identity and citizenship we collected and I'm curious to see how they turn out on this campus. I wonder if there will be very similar results because we are demographically all college students or if the results will be hugely different based on our life experiences.
Also, do you feel that simply knowing more about the world as a whole and its issues/problems would strengthen one's global citizenship as opposed to taking action by donating time and money? For example, I feel that I would become a better global citizen if I understood the political systems of the African Countries instead of donated to an organization.
